TEACHING METHODS

   Throughout my observation period, I had the privilege of witnessing my cooperating teacher's exceptional teaching methods while delivering English lessons to her students at SD Sint Carolus. Over the course of several weeks, I was amazed by the efficiency and effectiveness of her approach to teaching. Firstly, I noticed that she places great emphasis on ensuring that students understand the lesson objectives. Her dedication to this task is evident in the way she spares no effort in explaining each objective in detail and providing clear examples to help students grasp the concepts. This approach has a positive impact on the learning outcomes of her students, as they are better equipped to apply the concepts to real-life situations. Secondly, I was impressed by her deep understanding of the cultural significance of Bengkulu, Indonesia, which she incorporates into her teaching process. Her ability to localize and contextualize the teaching process by embracing traditional norms is remarkable and cultivates a rich cultural understanding among her students. This, in turn, helps her students connect better with their community and develop a sense of appreciation for their culture. Thirdly, as an educator, she champions diversity in the classroom by acknowledging the varying levels of language proficiency among her students. She skillfully combines Bahasa and English, translating words to bridge comprehension gaps, and ensures that every student understands the lesson. This creates an inclusive learning environment where every student feels welcomed and valued. Lastly, I observed that she places a strong emphasis on the efficiency and effectiveness of each lesson, given her responsibility for four elementary sections - Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 5, and Grade 6. Her teaching techniques are so engaging that the palpable engagement and enthusiasm of the students in every class underscore the success of her techniques. She fosters an environment where learning thrives and participation is not just encouraged but eagerly embraced. Overall, I am inspired by her dedication, passion, and the impact she has on her students. Her teaching techniques create a sense of excitement and enthusiasm among her students for learning, making her an excellent role model for other educators to follow.

AND INNOVATION

     At SD Sint Carolus in Bengkulu, Indonesia, teachers play a significant role in imparting knowledge to students, while learning materials serve as complementary resources. The school is facing the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, where students constantly encourage teachers to be creative and resourceful in their teaching methods.  One innovative element of the school's approach is the integration of modern technology. Projectors are used to display visual and video media, making the teaching and learning process more dynamic and engaging. This approach captures students' attention and helps them remember key concepts.  In addition to digital advancements, the school recognizes the value of traditional teaching materials. Printed activities, worksheets, and visuals are crucial in ensuring that students understand essential processes. Moreover, the inclusion of localized and contextualized traditional teaching materials strengthens the link between the curriculum and the community's cultural background.  SD Sint Carolus's multifaceted approach to learning materials demonstrates the school's commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its students. By combining modern technology, traditional materials, and localized content, the school enhances the learning experience and fosters innovation in its students' educational journey.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT

   At SD Sint Carolus, the approach to student assessment is centered around authenticity. This means that a combination of formative and summative techniques are used to evaluate a student's understanding and mastery of a particular subject. Formative assessments are used as check-ins to guide students throughout their learning journey, providing immediate feedback to help them improve. On the other hand, summative assessments are more like a grand finale, where students are tested on their academic knowledge using various question types, such as essays, multiple choice, and fill-in-the-blank challenges, to demonstrate their expertise.  SD Sint Carolus is committed to providing assessments that not only measure academic progress, but also foster an environment for dynamic and evolving learning. These assessments are designed to serve as a compass, guiding students towards a successful academic journey while honoring their achievements. The focus on authentic assessment ensures that students are not only tested on what they know, but also on their ability to apply that knowledge to real-world situations, encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
