The third day of our teaching program was an exciting one as our coordinator informed us that we would visit our cooperating school. Our mission was to meet with our resource teachers, tour the institution, and meet the principal. The school, SD Sint Carolus, was a private Catholic institution and the only one of its kind in Bengkulu, Indonesia. Despite the city's majority being of Muslim faith, the school aimed at being inclusive, offering access to all students.
Upon arrival at 10:00 AM, we were greeted by friendly staff and students who were thrilled to see us. We took a tour of the school, visiting several classrooms, and interacting with the students. The warm and welcoming atmosphere of the institution left an impression on us, and we felt safe and at home. The following day was even more exciting as I was assigned to work with Ms. Sari, my cooperating teacher, and assist her for eight hours. I met students from Grades 1, 5, and 6, who I would work closely with in the coming days. The students were enthusiastic and eager to learn, which made my work even more fulfilling. The week was off to a great start as we observed how the school's system works. We were keen on learning about their classroom management techniques, student discipline strategies, and cultural practices related to teaching and learning. The school also promoted extracurricular activities every Friday, providing students with hands-on learning experiences. The week was a success, and we were thrilled to continue our teaching development in such an inclusive and accommodating institution.
